About the collection
This was one of my favorite collections ever. I had the pleasure of working with these beautiful hijab models for the brand styledbyTaslim. This is one of those photoshoots where my services are required without providing the entire crew. The client wanted the models to be portrayed as a friend group that is into fashion and having a great time. It was not difficult to execute this vision as the models were extremely cooperative and willing to act. Having the brand owner on set was also beneficial as we were able to collaborate in order to showcase the best image for her brand. As my work demonstrates, I enjoy showcasing women in a powerful way, and this project encompassed all the elements I love.
Equipment and lighting
This set and project was captured using natural light. Additionally, it was shot on 35mm film (delta 400). I opted for film as it effectively enhances the softness of the models' skin and imparts a charming vintage aesthetic through its grain and subtle lack of sharpness. In order to mitigate the light fall off in certain closeup images, we incorporated the use of a reflector.
Team
Having a strong team for a project like this is crucial. I had the privilege of collaborating with some of the top professionals in the industry, including talented makeup artists, hairstylists, and assistants. The makeup artist for this project was Renee Donovan. In my role as the photographer and creative director, I instructed Renee to create a natural look for our model, and she executed it flawlessly. The hair was styled by a skilled hairstylist named Sam, who also followed the same guidance to achieve a simple look. I specifically wanted to capture movement in the hair, so straight hair was the perfect choice. Last but certainly not least, I had the invaluable assistance of two remarkable individuals, Ashley and David, who played a vital role in ensuring that the lighting, clothing, and all other aspects of the shoot were well taken care of. Having a female assistant on set is of great importance to me, as I believe that maintaining a professional relationship between a male photographer and a female model is essential. Having a female assistant makes this job much easier, as she is able to work closely and personally with the model.
Costs
This project was completed in about 6 hours and would cost between $2500-$3500. As always, the price may vary depending on the model used and charges for hair and makeup crew. When collaborating with a large team, it is crucial to prioritize the well-being of my team in all aspects, even though it may come at a higher cost for the client. However, this investment is essential. A well-compensated team is motivated and capable of delivering the desired results for a successful project execution.
